How to Prune Tomatoes
Pruning indeterminate tomatoes improves yield, airflow, and disease resistance. Determinate varieties do not need pruning.
What to Remove
Suckers are shoots that grow in the crotch between stem and branch. Remove when small (under 2 inches) by pinching with fingers.
How to Prune
- Identify the main stem
- Find suckers in branch crotches
- Pinch or snip when under 2 inches
- Leave 1-2 main leaders for large varieties
- Remove lower leaves touching soil
When Not to Prune
Never remove more than 30% of foliage at once. Stop pruning 4 weeks before first frost.
