Fertilizing Tomatoes
Tomatoes are heavy feeders that benefit from regular fertilization throughout the season.
NPK Needs by Stage
Transplanting: High phosphorus (P) for root development. Vegetative growth: Balanced N-P-K. Flowering/fruiting: Lower nitrogen, higher phosphorus and potassium.
Fertilizer Schedule
- At transplanting: Add compost and slow-release fertilizer to hole
- 2 weeks after transplanting: Balanced liquid fertilizer
- First flowers: Switch to low-nitrogen tomato fertilizer
- Every 2 weeks until harvest: Continue tomato fertilizer
Calcium Matters
Calcium deficiency causes blossom-end rot. Add crushed eggshells, gypsum, or calcium spray.
